On West Hancock Avenue in downtown Athens, a reclaimed tire recap facility is celebrating its tenth birthday in a big way.
In April of 2017, Athens’ own nonprofit and arthouse cinema Ciné announced the kickoff of its fundraiser that aims to purchase the building in which it currently resides. To do this, the board of the Athens Film Art Institute needs to raise $2.5 million.
The start of a journey
Ruta Abolins is the chair of the board as well as the director of the media archives and Peabody Awards collection at the University of Georgia. She has been involved with Ciné for about five years, helping to organize the other board members involved with Ciné and bringing about change that executive director Pamela Kohn dictates.
“As chair of the board, I think one of the most important things I do is to try and focus the board and push momentum forward,” Abolins said.
