From Dalton, GA roots to battling “Leatherface”: Horror director Jeff Burr looks back

A couple of years ago, Ohio-based filmmaker Henrique Couto called Banner-Herald staff writer Andrew Shearer to tell him that he would be driving down to Georgia to shoot Jeff Burr for a cameo appearance in his indie comedy, “Making Out.”

The shock wasn’t that the always charming Couto was able to snag a veteran horror director for a small role in one of his films, but the fact that Burr (whose films Shearer had in his library and whose career he’d followed in Fangoria magazine as a kid) was living in his home state.

Burr will be appearing at the Monsterama convention in Atlanta to meet fans and participate in panel discussions of his vast body of work, which includes the franchise sequels “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III” and parts 4 and 5 of the “Puppetmaster” series among many others. Before heading out to the show, Burr spoke to Shearer about his beginnings in Dalton and his thoughts on whether or not it’s necessary anymore to leave Georgia for Hollywood.
